Did you use a crib bumper?

I have one (as it came with the set I bought) and I’m wondering if I should use it.
I know they have ones that have holes in it so baby can breath just in case her face would get in it, but just wondering who used the regular ones? Why did you choose to or choose not to?
I know it increases the risk of SIDS, but how?
What I don’t know is that a young newborn cannot roll over or go around a lot. So how would it affect that? Also, when the baby IS able to go around and roll over, couldn’t she just go her face if it was to close to the bumper?
Also when did you start using them?

I didn’t use it when my son was a newborn, it just didn’t feel safe. In fact i’ve only just place it in his cot and he’s 8 months ancient.
No, it increases the risk of SIDS, and decreases the concentration of oxygen in the crib. A newborn could potentially turn and smother him/herself. I still don’t use one and my daughter is 10 months, she likes standing in her crib and I’m worried she’d use it as a step.
ADD: Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National SIDS Alliance have spoken out against the use of crib bumper pads. Potential safety risks associated with crib bumper use include suffocation, strangulation and entrapment. In addition, many older babies use bumper pads as a step up while trying to climb out of their cribs, which can lead to serious falls or entrapment between the outside of the pad and the bars of the crib.
The National SIDS Alliance states that the use of traditional padded crib bumpers can increase an infant’s risk of dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. Bumper pads decrease the airflow coming in and out of the crib, which can lead to the rebreathing of air, which is believed to be a causative factor in SIDS.
Yes certainly! I used one it helps protect them so their arms and legs don’t get caught between the bars too and they like to snuggle up next to it! I don’t reckon the baby will suffocate they can’t get that close to it, unless they got tangled. Just make sure itsecure to the crib! Congrats!!
I used it and I still am and shes 8 months. Ive chose to use it because she likes to place her back to it and she rolls alot in her sleep and it protects her from putting her arm or leg through with shes done and she hurt her self but if u r too worryed I suggest u get the breathable one I jus used the one my set came with to test it if I didnt feel comfotable then I would of got the other one. Best of luck!
We use a crib bumper. It’s the Carter’s Soft Dot bumper, which is really soft, but not overly stuffed. My daughter scoots around constantly in her sleep and we wanted some padding lining the crib to keep her from banging her head against the hard wood. (She had brain surgery in the NICU and feel that the risk of a bashed head is greater than the risk of having a bumper).
To each their own, but I personally reckon that if crib bumpers were perilous, then they wouldn’t be on the market!
My daughter didn’t go to her crib until she was 4 months adjusted (the majority of SIDS cases occur between 2-4 months of age) and I do leave a 1-2 inch gap between the mattress and the bumper. That is about as paranoid as I’m willing to be
It increases the risk of SIDS because baby sleeps at the same level as the bumpers. With the bumpers there it limits NEW oxygen and the baby is re breathing ancient air that is at his level which is not healthy. Without the bumpers the baby can breath “fresh” air.
I never used the bumpers for any of my children. I did but tie them around the legs of the crib below the mattress to baby could still breath.
They now have “breathable” crib bumpers that are mesh so baby can breath BUT they have not had enough testing to know if they are as safe as described.
**And LINDA obviously reads nothing and doesn’t speak to the doctors. Bumpers with holes, havent even had any studies to see if they are safe, so you shouldnt be telling her they are when YOU DONT KNOW for sure. ALSO, SIDS does not diminish when baby can lift head…for some babies that is a week ancient. It is 6 months- 1 year when a baby is safe from SIDS.
As long as the bumper has air holes…..then it will be fine. Once a baby can raise and turn their head – then the chances for SIDS goes away.
I did have a crib bumper with all 3 of my children and NEVER had any problems. It’s all really just a matter of choice…..
I’d rather not use the thick one… Just because you never know what will happen, your baby could roll over and get stuck in a weird position and not be able to get back out. The one I have is like mesh, so if he ever were to get his face pressed against the border, he’d still be able to breath
Some babies can roll very early. Most importantly, babies are unable to breathe through their mouths for months, so having a compromised air supply to their nose is perilous.
I have the puffy bumpers that came with the bedding set. I bought the mesh kind, thinking they would be safer. My baby slept in a bassinet or next to me as a newborn, and was never really in the crib for quite a while. Later on, I was worried to use the puffy ones or the mesh ones, because my baby can pull up and get stuck in or behind them.
I didn’t want to go without padding, becase my baby would often bump on the wood slats when trying to stand and go around, so I finished up buying these vertical bumpers:

I wish I’d known about them in the beginning. Now, if my baby falls, there is padding to prevent bumps and bruises.
If you’re interested, try searching for the on amazon.com- it’s a lot cheaper.
I have always used one. My baby first slept in a bassinet but when she went to her crib she had bumpers. She didn’t like to be swaddled after about 4 weeks and was always moving her legs and arms. I the front bumper off once to try it out but as soon as she learned to wiggle around the legs would get caught in between the slats of her crib. Now she is 9mths ancient and still sleeps with a bumper and can go around and roll over at night. Now that she can roll and sit up on her own I am not worried about SIDS. She pulls up now too so if the bumper wasn’t there I reckon she would stick her leg through and lose her balance. I guess the dread is mainly that they will plant their face in something and can’t get it out and suffocate. Sometimes she rolls over and does bury her face in the corner but w/a paci in she can breathe and if she can’t she will just go. Its a judgment call for moms I reckon….its whatever you are comfortable with.
Yes i used a normal one for my son. I started using it when he started sleeping in his crib, around 6 months. He slept with me for the first 4 months because it was way simpler to breastfeed in the nights because i had a c section, and wanted him close. Then i went him into a bassinett and he was only in that for about 2 months before i switched to his crib. I don’t know if you plot on having your babys crib in your room with you, but i did. To be honest if my sons crib was in a different room im not sure if i would feel the same about crib bumpers. I wasn’t worried about it because he was in my room and i could keep a close eye on him. Also whenever he would fall asleep in my arms if he was ever uncomfortable or couldn’t breath right from being to close to me he would re position himself. I reckon the main reason i used the bumper was because i found when i didn’t use it he would get his arms and legs stuck in between the bars. Someone said that using them increases the chance of SIDS because of suffocation. That is not right, if you know anything about SIDS suffocation IS NOT a factor. SIDS is “sudden infant death syndrome” and if a child dies from suffocation they declare the death from suffocation NOT SIDS. When they say a baby dies from SIDS its because it shows there was NO cause for death that’s why its a “sudden infant death”. I reckon the person who said something about their being not enough “fresh” air at the bottom of the crib would be more accurate BUT i reckon a huge factor with people using bumpers is keeping an eye on them and doing everything else properly, ex, it not being too hot or cold, no smoking, not having any unnecessary pillows, blankets, or toys in the crib. I have never ever heard of a baby dying from ONLY using bumpers, there were always other factors involved. I stopped using the bumpers when my son was about 12 months. My son is now a pleased and healthy 16 month ancient. If you choose to use crib bumpers just make sure they are not heavily padded or anything.
